On 19 April 2018, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) hosted a lecture themed Promoting ASEAN-China Scientific and Technological Cooperation and Innovation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) at ACC. The lecture is done by Dr. Chen Baoming, Director of Research Division for Comprehensive Development of Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development. Attended the event were diplomats from embassies of Brunei, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Viet Nam, and ASEAN students from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam who are studying at University of Science & Technology of Beijing, and officials of ACC, totaling around 50 participants.
Director Chen gave an overview of the China’s Scientific and Technological development under the Belt and Road Initiative and shared his understanding of the BRI as a road of innovation. On ASEAN-China scientific and technological cooperation and innovation, he briefed on the ongoing development of bilateral cooperation between China and foreign countries, successful cases, and approaches and suggestions for deepening cooperation. He stated that during the implementation of BRI, ASEAN and China should maintain close communications, enhance policy and project coordination, push forward the exchanges between universities, research institutes and personnel, promote technology transfer and scientific and technological resource-sharing and jointly promote innovation and entrepreneurship so as to achieve win-win cooperation. Director Chen also interacted with the audience on such topics as priority areas of ASEAN-China scientific and technological cooperation, protection of intellectual properties, and prospects of ASEAN students’ careers in China.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership and the ASEAN-China Year of Innovation. The said lecture hosted by ACC is aimed at raising the awareness of ASEAN and Chinese officials as well as ASEAN students on ASEAN-China scientific and technological cooperation and innovation under the BRI so as to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation.
