The 42nd Meeting of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Tourism Working Group and related meetings, which was co-organized by Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), Asian Development Bank (ADB) Viet Nam Resident Mission and Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO), were held in Phu Quoc, Viet Nam from 4 to 5 December, 2018. Around 70 delegates were present, including representatives from administrations of tourism of GMS countries, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Viet Nam, MTCO, ADB Vietnam Resident Mission, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) and ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC). Ms. Kong Roatlomang, Director of Education, Culture and Tourism Division of ACC, attended the meetings upon invitation and exchanged views with other delegates.
Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of VNAT, Mr. Steven Schipani, Unit Head of Project Administration of ADB Vietnam Resident Mission, and Mr. Jens Thraenhart, Executive Director of MTCO, delivered opening remarks. They said that with technical assistance by the Asian Development Bank, a solid strategic framework was put in place. The 2015-2020 Experience Mekong Tourism Marketing Strategy and the 2016-2025 GMS Tourism Sector Strategy provide a solid roadmap for developing and executing programs and initiatives. The regional transnational tourism collaboration was recognized and showcased as a global best practice. The road ahead was very exciting and promising as the parties strive to execute on the mandate and mission to drive sustainable and inclusive tourism development in the region.
Director Ms. Kong Roatlomang gave a presentation during the Meeting on ACC’s mandate and main work in tourism. She said the Meeting provided an important platform to carry out tourism cooperation between ASEAN countries and China, which would effectively promote people-to-people exchanges as well as practical cooperation in related fields.
On 5 December 2018, ACC also attended the Meeting of the Steering Committee for ADB Projects in GMS Region.
